80% Diet?
80% diet, 20% exercise.
That’s how the saying goes.
Is this true? What is it in relation to? What does it even mean?
Without a doubt there is fascination, myth and obsession around food that transcends culture, time, age and circumstance. Food is intricately tied in with memories, nostalgia, links to family and culture. Fascinatingly I have my finger on the pulse of what foods are considered “hot” (as distinct from spicy or warm) or “cold” (as distinct from refrigerated or frozen) that has been handed down to me through osmosis, as though it is fact.
I think that the reason 80% diet crops up so much is because we understand intimately that what we fuel our bodies with is an essential component of our overall health and wellbeing.
When we want to make a change in how we look or feel, the first lever we intuitively pull is diet. And this is correct. The problem for those of us without an education in the intricacies of diet, it’s hard to make sense of the flood of nutritional information that is out there.
