Do you still feel Human?

Do you still feel human?

Does this sound like an odd question to ask?

On first glance it seems the obvious answer is Yes. Of course. How else would I feel?

But with the ever increasing influence of “the algorithm” on our experience of our digital environment, how does this creep enter our experience of our entire lives?

Many traditions have a variation of the idea that what you think becomes your words, your words becomes your actions and your actions defines how you live your life.

The last year has been the flood of AI into our lives. This has increased in the news, the amount it crops up in the technology we are using, the questioning of whether a piece of work or content has been created or polished with AI.

Is AI a helpful tool or are we just a couple of steps away from stumbling into a world run by Terminator robots?

What is true is that no matter what level or “consciousness” we think AI is taking on, there is no life force flowing through all those 0’s and 1’s.

Every culture and time has grappled with the life force that animates us. Whether known as Qi or Prana, it’s often related to the breath that runs through our system.

With all the talk of the “intelligence” of the bots or the potential rise of their “consciousness”, we know for real that they are artificial, and there is no life force running through them.

Does this little missive seem rambling and disjointed? Does it run a bit off the rails and follow strange little ideas into funny little corners? Is it imperfect with grammatical errors and inconsistencies? Does it provoke more questions than it answers?

Maybe it’s because it was written by a human. One who is wondering about what it means to be one.
